Our Experience in SUSTAIN-A-THON 2024: A Green Innovation Journey

Participating in SUSTAIN-A-THON 2024, hosted by Indian Oil Corporation Ltd., was an exciting and transformative experience for our team, consisting of Adithiyan PV, Nikhil Venkataraj, and myself. We joined this challenge with a shared passion for sustainability, eager to innovate and contribute to a greener future. The hackathon wasn’t just a competition for us; it was an opportunity to explore new ideas, think deeply about energy sustainability, and push our creative boundaries.
The Challenge #
The hackathon’s theme centered around sustainability, with a focus on creating cost-effective and efficient membranes for renewable energy applications. This included hydrogen and biogas purification, as well as their use in electrolyzers and fuel cells. The problem statement was both challenging and intriguing, leading us to immerse ourselves in the realms of renewable energy and membrane technology.
Preliminary Round - MCQ Assessment #
Our journey began with an MCQ assessment, testing our knowledge of IndianOil’s sustainability practices and environmental initiatives. With 30 questions to tackle in just 15 minutes, this round was a critical eliminator. We were thrilled to pass this initial test, which paved the way for the challenges ahead.
Round 1 - Executive Summary Submission #
In Round 1, we submitted a 2-page executive summary of our proposed solution. We chose to focus on gas separation membranes, which play a vital role in renewable and alternative energy technologies. Our idea, the Integrated Renewable Energy Membrane System (IREMS), was designed to make gas separation processes more efficient and cost-effective. This round required us to clearly articulate our concept, emphasizing its core features and potential impact.
Round 2 - Detailed Presentation Submission #
Advancing to Round 2, we were tasked with creating a 5-slide PowerPoint presentation and a two-minute demo video. This was a challenging round, as it required us to present our idea concisely yet thoroughly. Our IREMS solution was modular, featuring advanced membrane selection, robust connection systems, and rigorous testing protocols. The video demonstration helped us showcase the feasibility and practicality of our concept.
Grand Finale - The Ultimate Test #
The Grand Finale marked the peak of our journey, where we presented our solution to a jury of Indian Oil Corporation’s Executive Directors. We submitted a 10-slide PowerPoint presentation and an updated two-minute prototype demo video. Although the pressure was high, the experience was incredibly rewarding. While we didn’t win a prize, the insights and feedback we received were invaluable.
Reflecting on IREMS - Our Solution #
IREMS (Integrated Renewable Energy Membrane System) was more than just a theoretical idea—it was a thoroughly researched, carefully designed system aimed at addressing global energy challenges. By combining advanced membrane technology with a modular design, IREMS offered a flexible solution capable of adapting to the changing needs of the energy sector. Every aspect of IREMS, from membrane selection to connection mechanisms, was built with efficiency, reliability, and sustainability in mind.
